In a Day’s Work: 4 Ways to Improve Employee Productivity

A business relies on its employees to meet objectives, but the relationship can’t be one-sided. If you notice employee productivity has diminished, there is most likely some deeper problems that need addressed. When people aren’t happy, or they feel like their job is meaningless, their work effort plummets. Rather than fixating on numbers, focus on the people who make them possible. By turning your attention to your employees’ mental health and well-being in the workplace, you’ll be able to improve productivity and company culture.

Improve the Workplace

Pay close attention to the environment of your office. Do you have good office cleaning protocol? Is the workplace free of distractions without feeling sterile and cold? The temperature should be a comfortable 65 to 70 degrees, and employees should not be facing walls or be too closed off from one another. However, you should also make sure that your workspace isn’t too open, either. Studies have found that extremely laid-back work environments produce greater distractions and decrease individual work productivity.

Hold Team-Building Exercises

Team-building helps identify weak spots in your workplace. Maybe you need to work on conflict resolution, or perhaps it’s time to reconsider how team leads and supervisors are handling their departments. Team-building can be as formal or casual as you want, but the goal should be to make employees feel comfortable, inspired and encouraged to offer feedback. Make sure that you work alongside your employees during these exercises. Workers who feel like management doesn’t care about them or their needs are likely to be distracted and put in a half-hearted effort each day.

Offer Incentives

If you’re facing a deadline and need output to improve right away, offer incentives. Rewards can be gift cards, a day off, or another small gift that encourages employees to hone their focus and go the extra mile in their work. Incentives might feel like a bribe, but think of them as another tool you can use to inspire your employees to work.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Friendly

Get to know your employees. Ask them about their day, what their current projects are and keep an open-door policy so people feel comfortable coming to you when they’re struggling. Productivity can fall when people feel like they are being ruled under an authoritarian manager.
Focus on tuning into the details that are contributing to your office’s lack of productivity. When you take a human-approach, you’ll make your employees feel acknowledged and validated. Taking the time to address the underlying problems in your workplace will create a more collaborative, healthy office environment that lifts people’s spirits and inspires them to do their best work every day.
