Questions To Help You Find The Right Energy Supplier

Questions To Help You Find The Right Energy Supplier

If you aren’t a regular energy switcher, the process of changing your gas and electricity suppliers may seem confusing and daunting.

Questions To Help You Find The Right Energy Supplier

But, if this is something that you are considering, then you can save your time and money in finding the right energy supplier for you by asking the following questions to your new energy supplier:

  • What is the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) being offered? : You should never agree to an electricity plan without knowing the price per kilowatt hour (kWh), the standard measure of electricity usage. Buying electricity without the knowledge of this rate is just like pumping gas without thinking at all about the price per gallon.
  • Is that price locked in, or will it vary every month? : Ask the supplier if the rate is fixed, or if your price will vary every month. Beware of variable rate plans, as they put you at the mercy of a number of factors, such as electricity markets and weather forecasts, both of which can drive up prices. It is thus recommended to go only with a fixed rate plan, where you lock in your price and avoid market spikes.
  • Can you show me my daily energy use? : When you can see how much energy you are using day-by-day or hour-by-hour, you can uncover ways to lower your bills seriously. One of the crucial questions is how much are you using when the business is closed.
  • Can you tell me about the laws I have to comply with? : Is the new energy supplier that you are considering informing you about directives and laws that could affect your business in case you don’t comply? Make sure to ask them about the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, Display Energy Certificates (DEC), the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and ISO 50001.
  • What is the term length of the agreement? : Ask your new supplier about the term length of your agreement. Also think about when the plan will expire. For instance, you may not want to renew your plan during summer, when electricity prices increase due to increased demand for the summer cooling season.
  • Is there any renewable energy in your plan? : If you are concerned about the environment, ask if there is any renewable energy in your plan, or options for adding it. You should be able to “go as green as you want” and support electricity generated by sun, wind or hydro sources.
  • Is there a price increase ‘built-in’ down the line? : Even if you get a fixed price, make sure that you know how long that particular price is guaranteed for. It should be for the full length of the term. However, some of the suppliers like to attract consumers in with a “value” deal, and then increase the price a few months down the line.
