Save Money Purchasing Used Construction Equipment

Are you a construction contractor or do you own a construction business? If so, you might be constantly upgrading your equipment as it begins to wear out. On the construction site, gear needs to be durable; otherwise, it won’t last long. When it comes to getting new construction equipment, is it worth it to purchase brand-new equipment or better to purchase used equipment?

Buying New Equipment Makes Sense Sometimes

You’re probably going to want to purchase some equipment brand-new. Certain machines need to last for as long as possible and when buying used gear, there’s always a risk that you’ll get a piece of machinery that won’t last as long as a new piece of equipment. For example, suppose you’re interested in getting a new winch. While winches are usually very durable, they do eventually wear out. You’ll need to decide whether you’d like to get a brand-new winch or simply purchase a refurbished one.

The Problem with Always Buying New Equipment

New equipment does last longer sometimes so under certain circumstances, buying new construction gear makes sense. However, there is a problem with always buying new construction equipment. Construction equipment is extremely expensive so when a piece of machinery breaks while you and your crew are on site, you might end up spending a lot of money replacing your piece of machinery. When you buy used gear, however, you can save a lot of money.

You might be thinking that it’s not worth buying used winches, rigging equipment, or sheaves because what would happen if the equipment broke again? Well, some construction equipment companies sell refurbished equipment at discount prices. There’s a big difference between a “used” winch and a refurbished winch. Refurbished equipment is almost always in good condition and while it might be considered secondhand, it’s still in workable condition and it will last you a long time.

So whether you’re looking for an air winch, hydraulic winch, or electric winch, you should consider looking for a refurbished unit before purchasing a brand-new one.

Alternatives to Purchasing

You don’t always have to own your gear but if you really need to use your winch every day, you might find it more cost-effective to get your winch repaired instead of buying a new one. It’s not difficult to find a winch servicing company so be sure to consider getting repairs before making a purchase.

There are other alternatives to purchasing new construction equipment. For example, you could hire your equipment instead of purchasing it. In a lot of cases, hiring construction equipment, especially when you’ll only need it for part of the job, is much more cost-effective than making a purchase of a brand-new piece of construction equipment.

To calculate the cost of a hired winch, for example, simply get a quote from a winch hire company, add up the amount of daily fees you’ll need to pay, and compare the total cost to the cost of a brand-new winch. If hire costs will be cheaper, there’s no need to purchase a new piece of equipment.
