What is Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the alternative to using tweezers, shavers, plucking, and waxing to remove hair from areas of the body. If you spend considerable time removing hair from unsightly areas around your body, laser hair removal is an established technology that you can look into. Typical treatment areas include the back, arms, legs, armpits, the bikini area, and of course, the face.

Laser hair removal in Vancouver uses pulses of laser light that penetrate into the hair follicles. These pulses destroy the follicles that promote hair growth. Let’s digress into the phases of hair growth to better understand the laser hair removal process:

  • Anagen phase – is the active growth phase for hair. The hair follicles at the root of the hair divide rapidly, adding to the length of the hair shaft. During this stage of growth, about 1 centimeter is added every 28 days. This active phase lasts from 2-7 years. This disparity is due to each individual’s genetic composition.
  • Catagen phase  – a short phase in the hair growth cycle, the catagen phase follows the anagen phase, where the hair stops growing and blood supply is cut off from the follicles. During the 2-3 weeks of the catagen phase, the hair follicles die off and detach from the dermal papillae.
  • Telogen – the purpose of the telogen phase is to prepare the hair follicles for the next cycle of growth. The usual length of this phase is from 2 to 4 months. During this phase, the club hairs will have formed and keratinized, meaning they are not receiving any more nutrients from the hair follicles. During this period, it normal to shed hundreds of hairs a day.
  • Exogen – some journals distinctly separate the shedding phase into what they call the exogen phase, which for others is part of the telogen phase. At any rate, in can be agreed that the telogen and exogen phases are the periods when hair growth has ceased and shedding starts.

The Anagen phase is the period where laser hair removal is most effective. This is when the hair is protein-rich and has plenty of melanin and keratin. As we mentioned earlier, your genes determine how long the hair follicle stays in the Anagen phase.
