Central air systems are becoming more common and less of a luxury item for most families in the United States. If you enjoy air conditioning in your own home, then you are probably familiar with how it functions and the noises it makes during a typical cycle. However, there are some sounds that you should not ignore, as doing so could mean hefty repair bills later on.
1. Consistent Clicking
Your air conditioner probably makes a variety of clicking noises when it kicks on and shuts off, and these can all be a normal part of how it runs. However, if the clicking is consistent, even when the unit is not running, this could be a sign that something is wrong. Clicking that starts out softly but then grows louder when the unit turns on could mean that the system’s thermostat is failing. Take note of how you often you hear these noises so you let your HVAC technician know about them.
2. Loud Squealing
If you turn on your AC unit and you hear a loud squealing sound during or directly after it starts up, you may think your blower’s fans might simply need oiling or tuning up. However, a noise like this could mean that your system’s fans are wearing out. While some older systems may sometimes squeal habitually, a newer unit that makes this sound should be checked out by a professional as soon as possible.
3. Banging Noises
Loud banging noises coming from your AC unit can indicate a serious problem such as a loose or broken part that is interfering with the normal operation of the system. If a part is broken and being tossed around by the blower, it may eventually get stuck in the blades and cause a jam. In turn, this could burn out the motor. If you hear these noises, turn off the unit and call a technician, who can come out and not only fix the problem but keep you AC unit working the way it should as well.
4. Frequent Buzzing
When your air conditioning unit starts making a frequent buzzing sound, it can be difficult to pinpoint its cause because it could be caused by several factors. Buzzing could mean your unit has loose parts or that the fan blades are wearing out. If you have only recently turned you system on for the first time, you may want to check the air filters because a dirty filter could be the source of the noise and may even effect your health if not maintained.
Having your air conditioner checked and cleaned by a professional before the start of the season can help you feel more confident about your unit’s condition. Make a list of how often you hear buzzing sounds and whether they are louder before or after the unit cycles.
