Knowledge of Gynecomastia is Important before Surgery

Knowledge of Gynecomastia is Important before Surgery

Surgery for the Gynecomastia is an increase in the mammary glands in men due to the active growth of glandular tissue. There is also the so-called phantom (false) gynecomastia, which is formed against the background of overweight in a young man. The problem is not a sentence, but it creates many physiological and psychological problems for a man. The disease manifests itself in the form of compaction of the breast tissue, and it is accompanied by painful sensations.

Gynecomastia is a disease in which males have excessive (beginning) development of the mammary gland on one or both sides. The cause of this disease is multifactorial. An effective method of treating gynecomastia is a combination of drug treatment with surgical removal of hypertrophic glandular tissue.

True gynecomastia is due to the proliferation of glandular tissue of the mammary gland. Such gynecomastia, like mastopathy, can be in a diffuse and nodular form. Gynecomastia can be accompanied by painful sensations and discharge from the nipple (transparent, cloudy, bloody, colostrums). At the same time, the mammary glands enlarge, become dense, sometimes painful. With false – an increase in the volume of the mammary gland is associated with fatty deposits. At the same time, in some cases, obesity can be combined with true gynecomastia.

Indications and contraindications for surgical treatment of gynecomastia in men

The operation to remove gynecomastia is performed according to the personal desire of the patient or at the risk of a malignant tumor – this is the main indication. Such an intervention has practically no contraindications, with the exception of general ones: diseases of the cardiovascular system, tuberculosis, acute infectious diseases, decreased immunity, etc.

What to do if gynecomastia is not treated?

The main danger is the risk of a malignant tumor in the mammary glands of a man. It is important to start comprehensive treatment in a timely manner under the close supervision of a specialist.

Surgery to remove gynecomastia in men – features and stages

Male Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia. On average, an operation takes about 90 minutes, and the patient does not need hospitalization – provided the uncomplicated immediate postoperative period on the same day, a man can leave the clinic.

Stages of the operation for gynecomastia:

  • A small incision is made in the lower part of the areola of the nipple, and the mammary gland is secreted and dissected from the surrounding tissues.
  • If necessary, fatty tissue is removed.
  • Drainage is being installed (as indicated).
  • The wound is sutured with a sterile dressing.
  • The resulting material is sent for histological analysis to exclude oncological processes.

A second appointment with the doctor is prescribed one to two days after the operation – for dressing and removing drainage, as well as monitoring the patient’s health.

With gynecomastia, an increase in the breast occurs and a dense glandular mass is palpated under the skin – this is the true form of gynecomastia – it is treated by surgical removal of the breast through an incision under the nipple. Quite often, male breast enlargement occurs due to adipose tissue – this is a false form of gynecomastia – is treated by removing excess adipose tissue, through small punctures of the skin, using liposuction.
