How to Motivate Your Child to Study Mathematics

Mathematics is often considered a difficult subject by students, especially those who are in middle school.  Many students fear this subject. It makes them develop the habit of avoiding mathematics while studying. Many students also develop anxiety and other stress-related problems before the mathematics test.

This phobia of mathematics can happen due to different causes. Often children do not understand the numerical process or the teaching method and never learn the important details. This makes solving problems difficult. In some situations, a poor mark in a certain examination or any incident starts their mathematics phobia.

If a student cannot understand the basic principles and problem-solving techniques then he or she may not understand the lesson at all. This starts the chain of incomplete learning and makes the child weak in mathematics. Besides that, if the education material (e.g. class 7 maths study material CBSE) is boring or the teaching method is not enough interesting then the child may not give enough attention to the lesson.

But, this does not mean that a child cannot develop an interest in mathematics. If the students are educated properly and interestingly then they can easily let their fear go and enjoy mathematics as a subject. Read this article for the techniques that can be used in this case-

  • Make studying fun

This is the best way to counter the phobia of mathematics. Ditch the traditional way and try to incorporate and involve the students in the learning process. For example, you can use daily life examples and videos and slides to break down the numerical process. It is quite fun for them and encourages the students to become attentive. Besides that, try to use interesting study materials. Choose a CBSE class 7 maths study material or any study material of any other class that has a lot of examples, pictures and colourful prints. If studying is fun then the fear will go away.

There are lots of games and quizzes on maths for different standards. Any parent or teacher can use these to attract attention from the students. A mathematics quiz will compel the child to solve it without fear. Games are also great and encourage healthy competition.

  • Create fun tests

Students often fear tests and examinations. If the subject is mathematics, the tension increases. Instead of conventional test papers, interesting and colorful worksheets can be used. Worksheets are fun and also help the students to learn and revise.

  • Try to understand their feelings

Often, some formula is imposed on students even they may not find it comfortable. Hence, if possible provide students with multiple solving methods and let them choose. Also, try to teach interactively, so that the learner gets enthusiastic about it.

  • Never give pressure

It is often noted that students develop the fear of mathematics because they feel they will be rebuked for their poor performance. Hence, try to understand their feelings. They cannot perform well under pressure. Therefore, it will be better if you allow them to give the examination freely and acknowledge their effort.

All of these tips and points will be helpful to counter the phobia of mathematics in students. Studying math well at school level will help them in further higher studies.
